Yesterday I visited Yorkshire Sculpture park in the boiling hot sunshine to search for inspiration for our shirt project.
I was inspired by the work of Jaume Plensa, who creates sculptures that appear to be in conversation, constructed from intricately cut iron letters and moulded into figures. In these sculptures he studies humans and our relationship with language and the written word as communication. I may introduce laser cutting into this project as a detailing, inspired by his work and need to look into what facilities are available.
I also liked the fluid shapes of Henry Moores sculptures, which could be exciting to translate into fabric using wadding and onto the body. Another fascinating work was built from wooden slats, each piece balanced ontop of another, balanced around the room to create a circular enclosure. I want to explore ideas of fragility and the temporary within my work, at some point. Annoyingly I took a detour and cutoff Andy Goldsworthy's exhibit which I would have loved to have seen.
